Terms of Use

Last updated 25 October 2026

These terms cover the HikeStash app, the public pages for hikes and gear lists that people share from it, and this website (together, “HikeStash”). HikeStash is provided by Scott Lane (“we”, “us”). By using HikeStash you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use it.

1. What HikeStash is

HikeStash helps you keep track of your hiking gear, build gear lists, plan hikes, and see weights and prices. It can import lists from LighterPack and from other people’s shared links, link your Strava activities to your hikes, and share a hike or list through a public link.

There are no HikeStash accounts. Your gear, lists and hikes are stored on your device. We don’t keep a copy of them unless you choose to share something (see section 4). You are responsible for your own backups: if you delete the app or lose your device without a backup, we can’t get your data back.

2. Using HikeStash

We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the app and the website for your own, non-commercial use, under these terms. You must not:

  • use HikeStash in a way that breaks the law or anyone else’s rights;
  • copy, resell or redistribute the app, or reverse engineer it except where the law allows;
  • try to get around rate limits or other protections, overload our servers, or reach parts of the service that aren’t meant for you;
  • use automated tools to scrape shared pages or to create or change shared links in bulk.

If you got the app from Apple’s App Store, Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies. Apple isn’t responsible for the app or its support, and Apple’s terms win if they conflict with these.

3. Your content

Everything you enter, such as gear names, weights, prices, notes, hike names and places, is your content and stays yours. You are responsible for it, including making sure you have the right to anything you import from LighterPack, another person’s shared link or anywhere else.

4. Sharing by public link

When you turn on a public link for a hike or a gear list, the app sends a copy of it to our sharing service and keeps that copy up to date while the link is on. The copy has the gear, weights, the hike’s place and dates, and prices only if you leave Show prices on. Hike notes are never shared.

  • Anyone with the link can see the page. Shared pages ask search engines not to list them, but we can’t promise a link stays private once you’ve passed it on.
  • You can turn a link off at any time on the hike’s or list’s Sharing page. That removes the copy from our service. Copies that other people already saved, imported into their own app, or that sit in link previews and caches may remain.
  • Only share what you’re happy for others to see. Don’t share anything unlawful, hateful, harassing, misleading, sexually explicit, or that infringes someone else’s rights, and don’t put other people’s personal information on a shared page without their permission.
  • You give us permission to store, copy and show what you share, only so the link, its page and its link preview work.
  • We may remove a shared page, or stop a link from working, if we believe it breaks these terms or the law, or if we need to protect the service or other people. We’ll try to let you know where we can, but there are no accounts, so usually we can’t.

5. Other services

HikeStash works with services run by others, and their own terms and privacy policies apply when you use them:

  • Strava. Connecting Strava is optional. Strava data is shown only to you in the app. Shared pages show only a link to each linked activity, which Strava shows to whoever your Strava privacy settings allow. You can disconnect at any time in Settings. HikeStash isn’t made, endorsed or supported by Strava. Use of Strava is subject to Strava’s terms.
  • LighterPack. Importing reads a list you point it at from lighterpack.com. HikeStash isn’t connected with LighterPack.
  • Maps and place search. Maps come from Apple (and from other map providers on the web and Android), and place search uses Photon, which is built on OpenStreetMap data. Opening a place may hand you over to Apple Maps or Google Maps.
  • Cloudflare hosts this website and the sharing service.

We don’t control these services and aren’t responsible for them, for their availability, or for changes they make that stop a HikeStash feature from working.

6. Safety

Hiking and other outdoor activities carry real risks, including injury and death. HikeStash is a gear-planning tool, not a safety, navigation or emergency tool.

  • Weights, prices, totals, charts and the gear catalogue are for information only. They may be wrong or out of date, and what you actually carry may differ. Check your own gear.
  • A packing list doesn’t tell you what’s safe to bring. Decide what you need for the conditions, your experience and the route, and follow local advice and land managers’ rules.
  • Don’t rely on HikeStash maps or places to find your way, and don’t rely on the app in an emergency.

You take part in outdoor activities at your own risk.

7. No warranty

HikeStash is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we make no promises that it will be free of errors, always available, keep your data safe, or suit any particular purpose, and we may change or stop any feature, including sharing and the Strava connection, at any time.

8. Limits on our liability

To the extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for any indirect or consequential loss, for loss of data, or for any injury, loss or damage that comes from hiking or other activities you plan with HikeStash or from relying on its information. If we are liable to you anyway, our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us for HikeStash in the 12 months before the claim, or AUD 50 if you paid nothing.

Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under consumer law that can’t be excluded, such as the consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law. Where we’re allowed to limit our liability for breaking one of those guarantees, we limit it to supplying the service again or paying for it to be supplied again.

9. Stopping

You can stop using HikeStash at any time: turn off your public links, disconnect Strava, and delete the app. Deleting the app doesn’t remove links that are still on, so turn them off first. We may stop providing HikeStash, or stop you from using the sharing service if you break these terms. Sections 3, 6, 7, 8 and 10 keep applying after that.

10. Changes and the law that applies

We may update these terms as HikeStash changes. We’ll change the date at the top and, for important changes, say so in the app or on this website. If you keep using HikeStash after a change, the new terms apply.

These terms are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia, and the courts there can hear any dispute about them. If part of these terms can’t be enforced, the rest still applies.
